Ebola Virus Disease: An Overview

Ebola virus disease is a serious illness that originated in Africa, where there is currently an outbreak. But for people living in countries outside Africa, it continues to be a very low threat.

The current outbreak of the Ebola virus mainly affects three countries in West Africa:

  • Guinea
  • Liberia
  • Sierra Leone

Around 27,000 cases and more than 11,000 deaths have been reported by the World Health Organization. This is the largest known outbreak of Ebola.

Preventing the Spread of EBOLA

  1. Avoid physical contact with people showing symptoms of the virus
  2. Wash your hands regularly with clean water and soap
  3. Keep away from (fruit) bats, monkeys, dead animals
  4. Animal products should be thoroughly cooked before consumption
  5. Inform health authorities immediately in case of contact with expected or confirmed Ebola Cases
  6. Only travel to areas where there is an Ebola outbreak in case of Urgent Need
